I've just discovered David Erik Nelson 's novels and I'm thrilled. Sci-fi/fantasy and a bit edgy. His style is kinda breezy and his characters are authentic. There Was No Sound of Thunder is an excellent start to his fiction. Long enough to plot a tricky story and develop a couple of characters, and short enough to finish quickly.
Wow! This short story made my hellacious trip on the elliptical fly by. I am not normally a huge fan of sci fi, but I loved the voice of the main narrator. I am a fan of "telling" (because the whole "showing not telling" is b**** made up by deranged editors)--you are telling me a story, son, so tell me a gd'd story! And David Nelson tells one of the best short stories I have read in ages. Suze is the kind of cool chick I would want to hang out with, and she is completely believable as a mid-90s college girl who works in a book store and wants to change the world. (I, ahem, resemble those remarks, but I digress!).
It was hard for me to read the name H*tler so many times, but you sort of get used to it. The whole time travel aspect is handled so well, without resorting to Stupid or Silly or just ignoring fatal flaws in the concept. Very, very well done!
